Nancy Selvin Workshop

Still Life With Print

Nancy Selvin teaches a three day, hands-on workshop on dissolving the boundaries between surface and form. Participants will learn various methods for laying color, images, and text onto ceramic surfaces. Nancy has taught for almost forty years internationally, and her current work pays tribute to the history of ceramic forms, while incorporating printmaking techniques and addressing the painters still life tradition.

Participants will begin the workshop learning an innovative handbuilding process which employs foam armarture. The resulting vessels will serve as a canvas for building up surface and information. Nancy will demonstrate how she completes the forms with simple screen printing techniques and underglaze applications. Participants will be able to add layers of meaning to their work by incorporating personally relevant images and text.

Nancy's extensive journeys with clay and the information she shares in this workshop will provide inspiration for anyone looking to create more personalized & meaningful ceramic objects.

Class size 18.

Nancy Selvin Bio

Nancy Selvin is an independent studio artist living and working in Berkeley CA. She has taught for almost forty years at colleges and workshops internationally. In 1970 Ms. Selvin received her M.A. from the University California at Berkeley. In addition to numerous awards she is the recipient of two National Endowment Artist's Fellowships (1980, 1988) and 2003 California Arts Council Fellowship. She is currently Adjunct Professor of Art at The California College of Art, in Oakland CA.

Ms. Selvin's work has been written about extensively and has appeared on the cover of American Craft and Ceramics Monthly. Her ceramics are included in public and private collections, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, the Arizona State University Art Museum, The Daum Museum, the Oakland Museum of California, the Microsoft Art Collection, the Mint Museum, Scripps College, Claremont CA, the Prieto Collection, Mills College, Kaiser Permanente, Leslie's Ceramics, the University of Iowa Art Museum, Shimpo America and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Nancy Selvin Artist Statement

For over four thousand years ceramic artists have made all manner of clay objects: ritual bowls, tiles covering vast palace walls, jars for oil, pots for tea, industrial toilets, bricks for construction, plates for dinner. My work acknowledges this historic tradition and pays tribute to the ceramic forms that surround us.

These still life constructions are metaphorical pots, ignoring function but built from traditional and authentic material. The text, screened on the surface, hints at the ideas contained within. The seemingly casual arrangement, the architectural format and the brushwork on the surface directly address the painter's still life tradition. The residue of handwork and the haptic quality of the color emphasize how the pieces were made.

Spare and loosly structured, these compositons have their origins in the rows of canning jars lining my mother's yellowed pantry and the rough implements, which hung at the back of my father's tool room. The work hints at the familiar re-examining the spaces we inhabit.
