Angelica Pozo will direct this three day, hands-on adventure in creating and decorating wet clay tiles. Participants will create tile panel pieces that combine a broad assortment of tile decorating techniques, working with terra cotta clay.
Angelica will demonstrate carving, stamping, sgrafitto, relief sculpting, slip trailing and inlay techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to practice these methods on individual tiles while working towards creating a larger panel. We will start with a central image tile, and build the piece out in concentric rows.
The class will start with a primer on basic tile and mosaic making methods. Participants will gain an understanding of how to gauge and plan for shrinkage and grout lines as they figure the size of tiles that frame their central panel. Angelica will discuss how utilizing different decorative approaches within one panel gives you the opportunity to frame, to provide contrast, give dramatic focus or to just plain ol' make the piece more interesting.
"One of the aspects I've always enjoyed about tile is the diversity of decorating and forming techniques available and the facility with which one can combine them all in one piece," comments Angelica. Bring a fresh notebook we'll be covering a lot of ground.
Class size 18.

Angelica Pozo is a nationally recognized ceramic artist and author of “Making and Installing Handmade Tile,” a beautifully illustrated, in depth how-to book, published by Lark Books in April of 2005. A New York City native, born of Cuban and Puerto Rican parents, Angelica came to Cleveland in 1984 seeking affordable studio space in a culturally active and ethnically diverse setting that gave her a sense of her old home ‘town.’ She came by way of Ann Arbor, Michigan where she received her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan and prior to that her BFA from SUNY College of Ceramics in Alfred, NY. Within her spacious Tremont neighborhood studio she has worked on numerous public art commissions, including those for RTA Airport rapid station, the ‘Marketplace’ bench outside of the “Q” Arena, plus tile/mosaic murals at CSU Law Library, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and OSU’s College of Social Work. Working on community or school based collaborative projects is also one of her fortes as she has honed her skills as an artist in residence on dozens of such projects often through the Ohio Arts Council but also with other organizations in and outside of Ohio. Her work has been widely exhibited, most notably in 2003 when she was included in a North American survey exhibition “21st Century Ceramics in the United States & Canada,” curated by Bill Hunt, former editor of Ceramics Monthly magazine; and in 1998 when she was juried into the “International Ceramic Public Art Exhibition” held in Tapei, Taiwan. Among her awards are an Ohio Arts Council and an NEA Regional Arts Midwest Individual Artist Fellowship. She also has work in the permanent collection of the Museum of Art and Design in New York City. Most recent endeavors have included a public art commission for a community park in Cleveland, a private commission for Lebron James’ new home and curating an exhibition for Spaces Gallery in Cleveland, “Bi-Lingual’ which leads off the gallery’s ‘08-’09 season during their 30th anniversary year.
Angelica takes full advantage of clay’s chameleon-like qualities in allowing her work to engage the full gamut between glazed painting to ceramic sculpture. A viewing of her entire repertoire will lead you from her sensuous flora-inspired sculptures, to functional tile objects and furniture, on up through to her large site specific public art installations. In all of them you will find a strong sense of design and color with an acute attention to detail and context. She especially enjoys working within the constraints that a site specific architectural project lends and looks forward to expanding her work from the massive public projects to more intimately scaled projects for both residential and business spaces.
I have found that working with tile and mosaic enables me to make pieces that are monumental in size, while still working with elements that are very intimate and human in scale. Having many components to a piece also provides me with a multitude of opportunities to alter color, shape, size, depth and texture. I am able to work with a rich and varied palette of surfaces as I move between relief, painted images, textured surfaces or mosaics. This sensibility is at play whether I am working on small studio pieces or large public art commissions.
